Red Crown Neon Sign: Very Rare Early 1900's Porcelain Petroliana

This vintage Red Crown neon sign, is an original porcelain enamel, service station sign, from the early 1900's. It is a single sided, horizontally oriented, rectangular strip sign, with working neon sign with a porcelain sign face, on a heavy metal housing can. The sign is unrestored (on a fully rebuilt housing can). The sign has a black background with the words "RED CROWN" in large red lettering with a white border. Below it reads "The Gasoline Of Quality" in white lettering. The sign lights up with red neon around the lettering of the words "RED CROWN" and in white neon around the border of the sign, just inside of the edge. This vintage neon sign an example of historic gas stations signage from early days of the American automotive industrial revolution. It is perfect for display in any man cave, game room, or automotive business. This iconic sign is of collection centerpiece size, measuring 100 inches (8 feet 4 inches) wide by 32 inches tall, and is on a 5  inch deep heavy metal electrical housing can. This vintage Red Crown neon sign is a true American icon, and any signs and advertisements from Standard Oil or any of its brands are among the most famous and popular petroliana items, for the serious collector.

Like all of our collectible signs, this vintage neon Red Crown sign is sold in original, unrestored condition as pictured. This sign has fairly significant dings and chipping to the enamel on the sign face, especially on the far right edge area, as pictured. This type of damage is extremely common in signs that were displayed outdoors, and would commonly be struck by wind blown items during storms. Other than these dings, the sign is fairly free of damage, has mostly clean lettering, and most importantly is free of rust. The sign overall is in Very Good/Excellent (VG/Exl) condition, which is a rare find in itself, and is as clean of an example of this now 100-year-old sign that you will find, that was actually used.

101 Point Neon And Electrical Restoration

We do not believe in restoring damage to porcelain (or tin) signs because it is our belief, and the prevailing belief among collectors that this type of wear is part of that item's story. Furthermore, there is no correct way to add new porcelain in a manor that would be consistent with a full museum quality restoration, and attempts at these types of restorations are generally frowned upon in the collector community. The only exception to this rule is when dealing with neon and electrical components, which is why we have done a 101 point, museum quality neon restoration on this antique Red Crown neon sign. These neon restorations are done under the supervision of, certified, and signed by award winning artist H.J. Nick as meeting all world class fine are qualifications. This certification means each item bearing his signature is backed by over 100 years of manufacturing world class fine art handmade furnishings, and restoring America's finest collectibles to original, museum quality condition. All neon restored by our in house glass blowers, who have blown new glass using the same techniques and materials that were used for the original neon. Also, any electrical parts including wiring and solid state transformers have been replaced. The neon features a separate on/off toggle pull cord as pictured.

Red Crown Brand Historical Information

John D. Rockefeller c. 1872, shortly after founding Standard Oil

The Red Crown Regular and White Crown Premium gasolines marketed by parent company Standard Oil Co. Inc. was an American oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Established in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler as a corporation in Ohio, it was the largest oil refinery in the world of its time. Its controversial history as one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when Standard Oil was declared a monopoly, which eventually broke up the dynasty.

Many company assets were forced to divid among the companies. One of those was the nationally recognized "Standard" brand name. The smaller emerging oil companies generally used the popular "Red Crown" and "White Crown" labels —without the displaying the Standard label.

Standard Oil Refinery No. 1 in Cleveland, Ohio, 1897

Standard Oil Company 1911 Break Up

Prior to the split in 1911, all of the various Standard “divisions” then in existence sold gasoline under the brandname “Red Crown”. At that time was only one of numerous picturesque trademarks then in use by the company. Most consumer trademarks from that era were graphically intricate. Some examples are the various tobacco trademarks with oriental or Indian themes, the Morton Salt girl, the Bon Ami chick, and many others.

With no relationship whatsoever to the product, it was simply one of the many image-trademarks of the era. That usage would be simple enough had Standard remained intact. That was not to be, for in 1911 the Supreme Court declared that Standard would be broken into 33 component companies.

51.1 MPG In 1917 With Red Crown Gas

On a humid night in July of 1917 a Franklin touring car carrying 4 passengers circled the Chicago Boulevards for an amazing 51 miles on a measured gallon of Red Crown Gasoline. This became the world record.

The test was performed under the observation of Professor Roesch (Engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology) and purchased the gasoline from a local garage to make sure that it was the usual commercial variety. Red Crown is always the same, no matter where you get it. The secret is in the range and adjustment of boiling point fractions.
