Roundup Coal Mining Company

Powering Montana’s Progress

Founded in October 1908, the Roundup Coal Mining Company quickly rose to prominence with the development of its Number 3 mine. This growth was supercharged by the arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1907, which provided the critical infrastructure to transport coal through the Musselshell Valley and beyond.

To distinguish itself in a competitive market, the company adopted a striking and memorable brand identity—the Bucking Bronco. Depicting a cowboy riding a wild bucking horse, this emblem became a proud symbol of the untamed Western frontier and Montana’s industrial momentum. It adorned everything from delivery wagons to tin signage, making “Roundup Coal” a household name.

Republic Coal Company

Building Communities, Fueling Growth

Preceding Roundup Coal by two years, the Republic Coal Company was established in 1906 and operated several vital mines near Klein, Montana. Among them, Mine No. 2 was a powerhouse—producing as many as 150 cars of coal per hour at its peak.

The Republic Coal Company played a foundational role in shaping the region. It catalyzed the growth of Klein, a company town that provided homes, schools, and community for the miners and their families. This tight-knit society revolved around the coal seams that powered much of the state’s early infrastructure and industry.
