Interesting Historical Facts

The first gasoline pump was invented and sold by Sylvanus F. Bowser in Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 5, 1885. This pump was not used for automobiles, as they had not been invented yet. It was instead used for some kerosene lamps and stoves. He later improved upon the pump by adding safety measures, and also by adding a hose to directly dispense fuel into automobiles. For a while, the term bowser was used to refer to a vertical gasoline pump. Although the term is not used anymore in the United States, it still is used sometimes in Australia and New Zealand.
Many early gasoline pumps had a calibrated glass cylinder on top. The desired quantity of fuel was pumped up into the cylinder as indicated by the calibration. Then the pumping was stopped and the gasoline was let out into the customers tank by gravity. When metering pumps came into use, a small glass globe with a turbine inside replaced the measuring cylinder but assured the customer that gasoline really was flowing into the tank.
A custom Photographic Historical Restoration Service Station build-to-suit mancave setup delivers an extraordinarily personal and deeply nostalgic tribute to a specific moment captured in time. Whether you provide a faded black-and-white snapshot of a grandfather’s 1930s rural filling station, a vintage color slide of a bustling 1950s highway stop, or a rare archival print of a forgotten local dealership, ArtFactory.com brings that exact image into three-dimensional reality. Available as a premium, turnkey service from initial conceptual design to finished construction, this bespoke mancave project transforms your residential space into an investment-grade private museum that preserves both American industrial history and your unique personal heritage.
The architectural foundation of this photograph-driven build relies on a rigorous analysis of the visual details in your reference image. Every line, texture, and structural detail is reverse-engineered to match the exact specifications of the original building. The layout features a prominent interior storefront facade finished in historically correct siding or enameled paneling, faithfully replicating the precise trim moldings, window frames, and regional corporate color schemes captured in your picture. The centerpiece of the room is a custom-engineered, polished concrete "gas island" footprint that anchors a series of flawless, color-matched vintage gas pumps — such as a 1920s visible pump or a 1950s Bennett model — rebuilt to match the exact hardware visible in your photo. These museum-quality pumps are topped with authentic, glowing glass globes displaying the precise petroleum branding of the era.
The surrounding environment is intricately styled to emulate the service bay, office, or customer waiting area shown in your photograph. The walls are curated with original, investment-class double-sided porcelain enamel signs (DSP) that mirror the exact advertisement plaques, tire racks, and promotional displays from your reference print. Fully functioning, authentic station equipment is integrated into the floor plan, featuring a restored Eco Air Meter station, a period-correct oil lubester, and a wire oil can rack stocked with historic, unopened tin cans from the correct decade. Every element is deliberately and faithfully positioned to capture the exact character and atmosphere of the original neighborhood station.
The true value of this photo-to-reality replica build lies in ArtFactory.com’s unyielding commitment to absolute historical accuracy and old-world craftsmanship. Rejecting modern, flimsy reproductions, every single artifact, sign, and piece of machinery sourced for your display is a genuine historic relic, meticulously restored to museum standards using original materials. Any accompanying custom cabinetry, workbenches, or structural entry doors are handcrafted by master artisans utilizing solid wood, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-forged wrought iron accents to match the architectural nuances of your picture. By managing the entire project lifecycle — from the initial photographic rendering and architectural drafting to the final master-craftsman construction and installation — ArtFactory.com delivers a breathtaking, highly collectible mancave that beautifully materializes your personal piece of the American roadside.
