Paper Maché Esso Watchdog: Rare Collectible German Shepherd Statue
The ESSO “ Watchdog” Let’s start with the beginning, In 1898 Standard Oil of New Jersey acquired the majority interest in the Imperial Oil Company. In 1911 Standard Oil was broken up into 34 companies and some still carried the name Standard Oil, they also were able to brand in certain states unlike other companies that had no territorial rights. Esso was founded in 1912 and is the phonetic pronunciation of the initials “S” and “O” in the name Standard Oil. Since then Esso has been widely known in Canada and many other countries for their Oil and Gasoline and also has been very involved in many communities. Our expert craftsmen have mounted this rare statue on a solid 2 and a half inch thick, solid walnut base, with a felted bottom.

Esso has been linked to Canada’s favorite sport Hockey since 1930, In 1936 Esso sponsored the first Radio Broadcast of a NHL game and in 1940 Esso sponsored overseas transmissions of hockey games for soldiers in WWII, and this is just one of many examples. The Esso Watchdog was the heating oil equivalent of the tiger for gasoline, the story goes is that one of the refiners had brought his German Shepard to work with him and had shortly become the mascot of the shop, and also a kind of watch dog. Since then the watchdog has been seen in many advertisements and even very large displays like on the top of buildings, billboards, and of course on top of the roofs of the heating oil trucks.

Paper Maché Throughout History
This particular Esso dog is very rare and was displayed in areas like a corporate office or lobby, and is made from Paper Mache a very old method consisting of chewed, pupled, or mashed paper and bound with adhesives such as glue, starch, or a paste. This sculpting method has been used since 200 B.C. originating in China under the Han Dynasty, shortly after learning how to make paper they used the paper mache process to make warrior helmets, Snuff boxes, and ceremonial masks. In ancient Egypt they made coffins and death masks from it, and starting around 1725 in Europe, gilded paper mache began to appear as a low-cost alternative to treated plaster or carved wood in architecture. Russia had a thriving industry in ornamental paper-mache with a large assortment of painted Russian paper-mache items that appear in a Tiffany & Co. catalog from 1893.
Around 1915 in World War I, the British were beginning to counter the highly effective sniping of the Germans. Using the paper mache techniques the British developed papier-mâché figures resembling soldiers to draw sniper fire. Some were equipped with an apparatus that produced smoke from a cigarette, to increase the realism of the effect. Paper mache advertising figures are extremely rare and collectible, such as the RCA nipper dog made in 1916 and 1917, which was never offered to the general public. The few that were produced were only for dealers for promotional and display purposes.
