Route 66 The Mother Road

During the mid-1960s, as H.J. Nick traveled the 2200 mile trip from Southern Illinois to California via route 66 many times. He recalls the unforgettable glow of Sinclair’s green neon signs lighting up Route 66:

Sinclair

“During my school days, I remember the sound of those huge signs humming loudly in the night, like friendly beacons along the road. It was a joyful, welcoming experience that has stayed with me all my life — nothing like a Steak and Shake burger, an ice-cold 10¢ Coke, and the sound of my V8 in my old jalopy rumbling down the highway.”

In those days, 15¢ burgers, 10¢ Coca-Colas, 18¢ gasoline, and 18¢ quarts of bulk oil filled the landscape of America’s open road. You could roll up a pack of Lucky's in your T-shirt sleeve, and feel completely free beneath the neon sky.

These signs symbolized freedom, opportunity, youth, and the American Dream. They became the heartbeat of postwar optimism that carried families westward toward opportunity. Sinclair’s glowing green letters marked safety, friendliness, and a taste of modernity in a simpler, more hopeful time.

Rarity & Historical Significance

Few Sinclair porcelain-and-neon signs of this magnitude remain today in complete, operational condition. Most were dismantled or lost during later corporate rebranding.
