Rare Dairy Queen Neon Pole Sign

60" W x 115 1/2" H x 14 1/2" D

Rare Dairy Queen Neon Sign Brings 85 years of history and nostalgia together. This retro Dairy Queen Neon Pole Sign showcases an era when soft serve ice cream became integral in American culture. When the first Dairy Queens opened in the 40's and 50's, many stores lacked consistency in branding, though most locations did use signs with a blue background, square sans serif font, and ice cream cone. In 1962, several franchises sought to create control over the brand and developed the American Dairy Queen Corporation. The logo changed to a red lip symbol with white, capitalized font.

Estimated to be from the 60's, this Dairy Queen Sign is a blend of styles from the early DQ days. Most likely made for use at a single franchise, it features a soft serve ice cream cone with the Dairy Queen trademark curl on top, a red background, and the original DQ lettering.

From Humble Beginnings To an International Brand
Own an Authentic Piece of American History

The first Dairy Queen store opened in Joliet, Illinois on June 22, 1940. Owned by founder Sherb Noble, he sold a new dessert invented by J.F McCullough and his son Alex- soft serve ice cream. The concept of serving ice cream at a slightly higher temperature, and using air to create a creamy consistency, was entirely new. The store was an immediate success and, within two hours of opening, dished out an amazing 1,600 servings to eager customers.

After World War 2, the franchise took off, opening 100 stores in 1947 and growing to 2,600 by 1955. Since then, Dairy Queen continues to successfully reevaluate its brand, bringing us new innovations like the Blizzard in 1985 (more than 175 million Blizzards sold the first year), while expanding to international markets. What makes Dairy Queen unique is the hometown feel inherent in each and every location. Every American DQ franchise is active in its local community and supports school groups through fundraising and student discounts.

Retro and Trendy - Dairy Queen Is an American Icon

Today, there are more than 6,400 stores worldwide in more than 25 countries. Dairy Queen is even owned by Warren Buffet, American's, and the world's, most successful investor. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Dairy Queen held Free Ice Cream Day on March 19, 2015, the same day Warren Buffet was named the world's third richest person.
