Description
Shell Die Cut Neon Sign: Original Vintage Collectible Petroliana
This is an original vintage Shell die cut neon sign that was displayed as roadside advertisement in the late 1950's. This is a large sign measuring 42 inches tall by 41 inches wide, and is 5 inches deep including the housing can (Weight: 40 Pounds). It is a perfect size sign to be both large enough to be used as a collection centerpiece, while still being small enough to fit in a standard room, or not take up all of your wall space in a large man cave. This authentic gasoline advertisement for Shell gas stations is just one of hundreds of original, collectible petroliana signs currently available from ArtFactory.com. It is a genuine, single sided, porcelain enamel, vintage Shell die cut neon sign that is seashell shaped, and has a yellow background with a red details. It reads "Shell" in large red lettering in the center of this vintage Shell die cut neon sign. The neon lights up in lights up in yellow neon around the outer border of the sign, as pictured. The sign is not dated, but the style of the logo was only used from 1955 and 1963, thus meaning this sign was manufactured during that period.
Like all of our collectible signs, this vintage Shell die cut neon sign is sold in original, unrestored condition, as pictured. We do not believe in restoring old signs because it is our belief that every ding, dent, and blemish is part of the story and history of the item. The porcelain enamel sign is in Excellent/Very Good Plus (Exl/VG+) condition overall, and is an extremely clean example of this now over 60-year-old sign, with only a few small chips to the porcelain on the sign face. The only blemish of any significance is in the lower right corner of the sign where there is a moderate sized scuff in that are. Otherwise, any other blemishes, which are few to begin with are extremely minor, and barely visible. There are no large dings from wind blown objects as is commonly seen.

History Of Shell Gasoline And The "Pecten" (Scallop Shell) Logo
The history of Shell gasoline and Shell gas station signs is quite rich, dating back to the late 19th century. Here's an overview:
- Beginnings: The roots of Shell can be traced back to the 1830s when Marcus Samuel Sr. started a small antique shop in London. The shop expanded into dealing with sea shells, which eventually led to the importation of oriental shells. This laid the groundwork for the Shell Transport and Trading Company.
- Petroleum Trading: In the late 19th century, the company began to trade in kerosene, the main lighting fuel of the time. It later expanded into the trading of petroleum.
- Pecten Emblem: The famous Shell emblem, known as the "pecten," was introduced in 1900. The pecten is a stylized representation of a scallop shell, chosen because it is a symbol of pilgrimage in European art.
- Gasoline: Shell began selling gasoline in the early 20th century, initially focusing on supplying fuel for early motor cars.
- Expansion: Shell expanded rapidly, establishing a presence across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The company played a significant role in the development of the oil industry worldwide.
- Gas Station Signs: As Shell expanded its network of gas stations, it introduced distinctive signage to make its stations easily recognizable. The Shell sign typically features the company's name and the iconic pecten emblem, often in bright yellow or red colors against a white background.
- Evolution: Over the years, the design of Shell gas station signs has evolved to keep up with changing trends and technologies. While the basic elements of the pecten emblem and company name remain consistent, variations in size, shape, and lighting have been introduced.
- Iconic Status: The Shell logo and gas station signs have become iconic symbols of the petroleum industry and are instantly recognizable worldwide. They are associated with quality, reliability, and innovation in the energy sector.
