Tydol Gasoline Globe – TGG3910
By the 1950s, most TYDOL stations had been rebranded or removed, making original globes from this era scarce and highly collectable.
Gas pump globes like this one helped define the visual language of early motoring culture—clean geometric fonts, bold colors, simple circular forms, and instantly recognizable company logos.
Description
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The TYDOL brand was part of Tide Water Oil Company, founded in the late 19th century and later associated with Flying A and Veedol motor oils. By the 1920s–1940s, TYDOL stations were common throughout the American West, especially along the early U.S. Route 66, where they served the growing number of motorists traveling between Chicago and the Pacific Coast.
These illuminated glass globes sat atop roadside gas pumps, acting as both a functional light source and a visual beacon to travelers long before interstate highways, neon skylines, or modern branding.

H.J. Nick grew up during the golden era of American road travel. As a boy in the 1950s, he rode with his family along early stretches of Route 66, where brightly lit service station globes like TYDOL, Richfield, and Flying A guided travelers across the desert nights. These glowing spheres were more than advertisements—they were symbols of independence, progress, and the promise of the open road.
Nick later became a master craftsman and historian of American industrial design, and he often recounts how these early roadside icons shaped his understanding of functional artistry: objects built with pride, simplicity, and purpose. To him, an authentic TYDOL globe is a surviving artifact of the spirit that built Route 66—rugged ingenuity, family travel, and the great American dream of going west
