A BFGoodrich “Smileage” tire refers to a marketing campaign from the late 1950s and early 1960s, particularly for the BFGoodrich Silvertown tire line, promoting the worry-free and long-lasting experience of their tires.
The campaign encouraged drivers to “stop at the sign of the smiling tire” for a “summer of fun” and to “forget tire worries,” implying the tires’ durability and quality.
Description
B.F. Goodrich was founded in 1870 in Akron, Ohio by Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich.
It was one of the pioneering American tire companies famous for innovations such as the first rubber hose and pneumatic automobile tire in the U.S. and for the development of synthetic rubber during WWII. This type of neon dealership sign was originally supplied directly by B.F. Goodrich to independent tire dealers and service stations across America.
By the mid-20th century, B.F. Goodrich was a household name, competing with Goodyear, Firestone, and U.S. Rubber (Uniroyal) and produced iconic tire brands like Silvertown. The slogan “Silvertown” and smiling tire-face design were used heavily between the late 1940s through early 1960s. The design with the happy tire face was meant to stand out along highways during the golden age of car culture in the 1950s–60s. The “Smileage” campaign was one of their clever advertising slogans playing on words: more “mileage” + “smiles.”
These signs were company property, as noted by the stencil on the back: “PROPERTY OF THE B.F. GOODRICH COMPANY – MADE IN U.S.A.” Dealers didn’t technically own them; they were on loan for as long as they carried B.F. Goodrich products. Stock No. 0-616-GT and A-M 2-60 indicates February 1960 as the production date.
