History Of The PAM Clock Company

The PAM Clock Company, founded by Walter Pam in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, was known for producing advertising clocks and thermometers. The company played a significant role in the mid-20th-century advertising industry, creating distinctive and eye-catching promotional items for various companies and products.

Here's a summary of key historical information about the PAM Clock Company:

  1. Founding and Early Years (1947-1949): Walter Pam established the PAM Clock Company in 1947. The company initially focused on producing point-of-sale clocks and signs. The first PAM clocks were manufactured in 1949.
  2. Advertising Clocks and Thermometers: PAM Clocks became renowned for their advertising clocks and thermometers. These items featured unique reverse-painted glass faces and aluminum bodies. The clocks came in various shapes and sizes, including round, square, and diamond shapes.
  3. Product Range and Clients: PAM Clocks created advertising materials for a diverse range of products and companies. Their distinctive backlit graphics promoted items such as milk, soft drinks, beer, gas and motor oil, vehicles, spark plugs, bread, shoes, and medicines. Major brands, including Coca Cola, Orange Crush, Pennzoil, and ICEE, had clocks and signs produced by the PAM Clock Company.
  4. Closure (1983): The decline in the popularity of glass advertising, with plastic signs and clocks replacing them, led to the closure of the PAM Clock Company in 1983. This change in preference for advertising materials contributed to the company's decline.
  5. Challenges with Preservation: Over time, the reverse-painted faces of PAM Clocks would often experience issues such as cracking and bake due to the heat generated by high-watt bulbs used to light these signs. Preserving the clean and crisp original faces became a challenge for collectors and enthusiasts.
  6. Legacy: PAM Clocks are now considered collectibles, sought after by enthusiasts of vintage advertising and Americana. The clocks and thermometers produced by the PAM Clock Company reflect a specific era in advertising history, capturing the design aesthetics and promotional strategies of mid-20th-century America.

The historical information provided highlights the role of the PAM Clock Company in the advertising industry, showcasing its contribution to the creation of iconic promotional items during a specific period in American history.
