About Vintage Lighted Advertising Signs
Advertising signs went through many changes over the years, from cave drawings to our current computer generated displays on LED billboards. Sign lighting has gone from the first 1840 gas light at the P.T. Barnum Museum, the first incandescent lights used in signs in 1881, to the first neon sign in used 1921. Signs have been made from wood, porcelain, and metal. However, World War II changed the history of signage when the prohibition of metal sign manufacturing in 1942 introduced the advent of colored translucent plastics.
About Mobil Gas Company
Mobil was part of the original Socony-Vaccuum Oil Company, a major oil company in American. In 1911 following the break-up of Standard Oil, Socony (Standard Oil Company of New York) was founded along with 33 other successor companies. The Mobiloil trademark was registered by the Socony company in 1920. In 1963 they changed the trade name to simply "Mobil". Mobil was among the largest sellers of gasoline and motor oil in the U.S. through the years. Mobil gas merged with Exxon in 1999 to form the current ExxonMobil company.
The Magnolia Petroleum Company founded in 1911, was another company founded as part of the Standard Oil break-up. Socony gained their stock in 1925, and was fully incorporated into their Mobil division by 1959. Magnolia's red Pegasus logo has been used as a Mobil emblem since the 1930s.
