The horizontally oriented, rectangular shaped sign was manufactured in 1948 by Press Sign, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. per the maker's mark (pictured). There is a small Pennsylvania Crude Oil Association Sticker (Copyright 1932) in the lower, left corner of the sign. The sign lights up with white colored neon around the border of the lettering of the word "AMALIE", and yellow neon around the border of the sign and the border of the lettering of the words "MOTOR OIL" It is an authentic advertisement that was originally displayed at service stations in the late 1940's. We do not believe in restoring old signs because it is our belief that every ding, dent, and blemish is part of the story and history of the item.To top it all off, this vintage Amalie neon sign features a separate on/off toggle pull cord, as pictured, so the sign can easily be turned on and off without unplugging.
Like all of our collectible signs, this vintage Amalie neon sign is sold in original, unrestored condition (as pictured). This sign is in great condition for an item that is nearly, 80-years-old. There is but a handful of extremely small chips on the face of the sign, but overall there are only about 5 of these small dings on the entire sign, none of which is of any particular significance. These mostly smaller sized dings and chips are extremely common in signs of this age. This sign is in Excellent/Near Mint (EXL/NR MT) condition overall. It is extremely rare to find a sign of this age, in this condition, and something like this is unlikely to come up on the market again in the near future.

Amalie Motor Oil History
Amalie Motor Oil is a well-established brand in the automotive lubrication industry, with a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. Here's an overview of its history:
Early Beginnings
Amalie Oil Company was founded in 1903 by two businessmen, J. L. "Jay" Amalie and W.C. Bischof, in Tampa, Florida. The company began by producing motor oils and lubricants designed for automotive engines, at a time when the automobile industry was still in its infancy. As a pioneer in the industry, Amalie set out to create high-quality oils and lubricants to meet the needs of a growing market for automobiles and other machinery.
Growth and Innovation
Throughout the 20th century, Amalie continued to grow and innovate, expanding its product line and increasing its presence in the automotive industry. By the 1920s, Amalie had established itself as a trusted brand for motor oils and other petroleum-based products. The company was known for its focus on quality and customer satisfaction, which helped it gain a loyal following among consumers and mechanics alike.
In the 1930s, Amalie made significant strides in refining and improving its motor oils, ensuring they met the increasing demands of newer, more powerful engines. This period of innovation helped to solidify Amalie's reputation as a leader in automotive lubrication.
Post-World War II Expansion
After World War II, Amalie Oil continued its expansion. The demand for motor oils surged as the automobile industry boomed in the post-war era, and Amalie took advantage of this growth. The company expanded its operations and began to offer a wider variety of products, including motor oils, transmission fluids, and other lubricants for both consumer and commercial vehicles.
During this time, Amalie also developed a reputation for producing oils that were known for their durability and performance under high-stress conditions, making them popular among racing teams and performance car enthusiasts.
Late 20th Century
In the 1970s and 1980s, Amalie continued to adapt to the changing needs of the automotive market. The company was quick to respond to new industry standards and environmental regulations. During this period, Amalie introduced synthetic oils to its product lineup, which offered better performance and longevity compared to conventional oils.
Modern Era
Entering the 21st century, Amalie Oil has continued to grow and diversify. The company has expanded its product offerings to include synthetic and semi-synthetic oils, as well as specialized lubricants for heavy-duty vehicles, industrial machinery, and agricultural equipment. Amalie's products are marketed worldwide, and the company has built a strong reputation for delivering high-performance lubricants for both everyday vehicles and high-performance racing applications.
Amalie is also recognized for its involvement in motorsports, including sponsorships and partnerships with racing teams and events. Their products have been used by professional drivers in various racing series, including NASCAR and other motorsport disciplines.
Today
Amalie Oil Company remains a family-owned business, still headquartered in Tampa, Florida. It continues to produce a broad range of automotive oils, lubricants, and greases, serving customers across North America and beyond. The company prides itself on its long legacy of quality and innovation, striving to meet the needs of both everyday drivers and professional mechanics.
