Vintage Shell Gas Station Lighted Sign - Rare Investment Quality Americana
Advertising signs went through many changes over the years, from cave drawings to our current computer generated displays on LED billboards. Sign lighting has gone from the first 1840 gas light at the P.T. Barnum Museum, the first incandescent lights used in signs in 1881, to the first neon sign in used 1921. Signs have been made from wood, porcelain, and metal. However, World War II changed the history of signage when the prohibition of metal sign manufacturing in 1942 introduced the advent of colored translucent plastics.
About Shell Oil Company
The Shell Oil Company is the US-based subsidiary based in Houston, Texas of the Royal Dutch Shell company. The Royal Dutch Shell company is one of the world's most valuable companies and the 2nd largest company in the world after Wal-Mart as of 2013. The Royal Dutch Shell company was created by the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum (Netherlands) and Shell Transport and Trading (UK) in February 1907 when these two rival companies decided to combine their resources in order to compete globally with Rockefeller's Standard Oil company who was dominating the petroleum market at that time.
Dutch based Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, was founded by Jean Baptiste August Kessler and Henri Deterding in 1890 as a small oil exploration charted granted by Netherland's King William III in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia).
In 1897 brothers Marcus Samuel and Samuel Samuel, founded the "Shell" Transport and Trading Company. Their father, also Marcus Samuel, who started the company in 1833, imported and sold sea-shells to London collectors, from which the company took its name. The younger Marcus saw the potential of exporting lamp oil in 1892 from the Caspian Sea where they collected seashells, and commissioned the world's first oil tanker. By 1907 the company had an entire fleet of tankers.
