Tropical Paints Flange Sign Additional Details
Like all of our signs, this vintage Tropical Paints flange sign in original, unrestored condition. This sign is in Excellent/Very Good (Exl/VG) condition overall, and is a clean of an example of this now nearly 80-year-old sign. The most significant blemish on the sign is a medium sized, v-shaped scratch in the upper left corner of side 1, just inside the flange. There is some other light scratching on the sign, and some minor chipping around the edges, but otherwise it is free of damage. We believe in keeping signs in unrestored condition, because these blemishes are part of the history and story of the item. All of our signs are guaranteed to be authentic, backed by over a century of experience in the antiques and collectibles marketplace. The Tropical Paint and Oil Company History
The Tropical Paint & Oil Company of Cleveland, Ohio, boasts a rich history that spans over a century, marked by innovation, expansion, and eventual consolidation. Here's a detailed overview:
1883 - Founding: The Tropical Paint & Oil Company was founded in 1883 in Cleveland, Ohio, with a focus on producing oils and industrial paints. Its establishment coincided with the burgeoning industrialization of the United States, as Cleveland emerged as a hub for manufacturing and innovation.
Niche Focus on Tropical Formulations: From its inception, the company differentiated itself by specializing in manufacturing paints and coatings specifically tailored for use in tropical climates. This strategic focus positioned the company as a leader in providing solutions for the unique challenges posed by hot, humid, and corrosive environments.
Expansion and Market Presence: Over the years, Tropical Paint & Oil Company expanded its market presence beyond Cleveland, serving customers not only across the United States but also internationally. Its products found applications in residential, commercial, and industrial projects in tropical regions worldwide, earning it a reputation for quality and durability.
1964 - Acquisition by Hooker Chemical Corporation: In 1964, the company underwent a significant change when it was acquired by the Hooker Chemical Corporation, a move that provided access to additional resources and expertise. Despite the change in ownership, Tropical continued to operate and innovate under the new umbrella.
1977 - Acquisition by Bondex International, Inc.: Further changes occurred in 1977 when Bondex International, Inc., a subsidiary of RPM, Inc., acquired Tropical Paint & Oil Company. This acquisition brought Tropical into the fold of a larger corporate entity, offering opportunities for synergies and growth.
1990 - Dissolution: Unfortunately, despite its long and storied history, Tropical Paint & Oil Company dissolved in 1990. The reasons behind the dissolution may vary and could be attributed to factors such as shifts in market dynamics, industry consolidation, or changes in corporate strategy.
Legacy: Despite its eventual dissolution, the legacy of Tropical Paint & Oil Company lives on through its contributions to the paint and coatings industry. The company's focus on tropical formulations, commitment to quality, and pioneering spirit have left an indelible mark on the industry, influencing the development of coatings designed for challenging environments worldwide.
