Vintage Lucky Lures Neon Sign: Tin Litho, Paw Paw Bait & Tackle

This vintage Lucky Lures neon sign, for Paw Paw Bait Company is an original advertisement from the 1920's, for Lucky Lures. It is a horizontally shaped, rectangular sign, and is an EXTREMELY RARE LARGE VARIATION of this famous sign that measures 48 inches (4 feet) wide by 24 inches (2 feet) tall, and is 6 inches deep including heavy metal housing can (We also have the slightly more common, smaller, 3 feet wide variation of this Paw Paw Bait Co. sign currently in stock as well. Both of these signs are authentic 1920's era tin litho signs, in original condition with fully restored neon). This vintage Lucky Lures sign is just one of hundreds of original, collectible Americana signs currently available from ArtFactory.com. It is a genuine, single sided heavy tin litho sign. It is a truly rare and unique advertising sign for fishing bait and tackle from this era. This authentic collectible advertisement features a graphic of a large mouth bass on the left of the sign that is swimming in water that goes across the bottom area of the sign. The sign resembles in appearance the box that these lures were sold in. The rectangular sign is full color with a mostly red background. The sign has white, navy blue and yellow lettering and graphics, and reads "GO FOR LUCKY LURES, THE BEST BAITS IN ANY TACKLE BOX". Just below, it reads "PAW PAW BAIT CO., PAW PAW, MI" in smaller black lettering.  The outline of the lettering on the the word "Go For", lights up in yellow neon. The outline of the lettering "LUCKY LURES" and the outline of the bass and waves in the water lights up in a blueish green neon.

Like all of our collectible signs, it is sold in original, unrestored condition (as pictured). This Lucky Lures neon sign is in amazing condition for an item that is now approaching 100-years-old. Some very light and slight chips (mostly in the area just to the right of the bass's mouth, as pictured) account for the only visible blemishes on the sign face, and the sign appears to have only been displayed indoors, as it does not have any damage from being struck by wind blown objects.

Paw Paw Bait Company History

Paw Paw Bait Company, located in Paw Paw, Michigan, is a historical and well-known producer of fishing lures and tackle. The company has a rich history dating back to 1924, when Clyde Sinclair and Floyd Phelps purchased the Moonlight Bait Company, and renamed it Paw Paw Bait Company of Paw Paw, Michigan. Here's an overview of the history of Paw Paw Bait Co:

Founding and Early Years: Paw Paw Bait Company was founded in the 1920s in Paw Paw, Michigan. It started as a small-scale operation, producing fishing lures primarily made of wood. The company quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, innovative, and effective fishing lures that attracted anglers from various regions.

Innovation and Success: Paw Paw Bait Co was known for its creativity and innovation in lure design. They introduced several unique designs and features that made their lures stand out in the market. One of their most famous creations was the "Paw Paw Wotta Frog," a popular frog-shaped fishing lure. This lure, along with others like the "Paw Paw Flap-Jack" and the "Paw Paw Jointed Pikie," became iconic and sought-after items among anglers.

Enduring Legacy: Paw Paw Bait Company continued to thrive throughout the mid-20th century, gaining a dedicated following among fishing enthusiasts. Their lures were prized for their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and effectiveness in catching fish. The company contributed significantly to the fishing tackle industry and left a lasting legacy. In additional to fishing lures, Paw Paw expanded their inventory to include items such as ice spearing decoys and duck decoys. These items were known to be of exceptional quality, and are highly sought after by collectors today.

Challenges and Decline: Like many traditional fishing tackle manufacturers, Paw Paw Bait Company faced challenges as the industry evolved. Changes in fishing trends, materials, and manufacturing processes impacted the company's ability to compete in the modern market. As a result, the company gradually declined in the later decades, and Paw Paw sold to the Shakespeare Tackle Company of Kalamazoo in the early 1970's.

Collectibility and Nostalgia: Despite its decline, Paw Paw Bait Company's lures remained highly collectible among fishing enthusiasts and antique collectors. The company's vintage lures, with their distinctive designs and historical significance, are often sought after and valued for their aesthetic appeal and historical importance.
