Description
The American history behind Old Gold
Old Gold was introduced in April 1926 by the P. Lorillard Company, one of America's oldest tobacco businesses, whose origins date to 1760.
The company promoted Old Gold aggressively through newspapers, magazines, radio, and eventually television. Its early advertising became famous for the slogan “Not a Cough in a Carload,” a claim reflecting the misleading health-related marketing common in the tobacco industry at the time.
By the early 1950s, Old Gold had shifted toward the promise of a smoking treat. The brand promoted both regular and king-size cigarettes, exactly as illustrated on your sign. Contemporary advertisements from 1954 confirm this combination of packaging and language.
Signs like this were designed for retail advertising, where strong colors and instantly recognizable packaging attracted attention in neighborhood stores, tobacco shops, and other cigarette outlets.
