Description
Vintage RC Cola Neon Sign: Rare Royal Crown Soda Memorabilia
This extremely rare vintage, RC Cola neon sign is from the late 1930's, and is one of the oldest advertisements to feature the name "Royal Crown", after the name change to RC, from Chero-Cola in 1934. It is an original advertisement with fully restored neon and electrical, on a brand new heavy metal housing can. This extra large, die cut, bottle shaped tin litho sign measures 59 inches (4 feet 11 inches) tall, by 18 inches at its widest point (measured at the base) and is 6 inches thick, including the heavy metal housing can. It is a single sided sign with a primarily brown (cola colored) background in the bottle area, representing a full bottle of soda. The blue glass colored bottle has a yellow cap, and red and yellow labels and lettering. The label reads "Royal Crown RC Cola", which is also printed in smaller lettering on the bottle cap. There are also the letters "RC" in yellow just below the neck of the bottle. This vintage RC Cole neon sign lights up with light blue neon around the border of the sign. Additionally, the sign lights up in yellow neon around the border of the bottle cap, the stripes on the label area, and the lettering on the label area.
Like all of our collectible signs, this rare, vintage RC Cola neon sign is sold in original, unrestored condition, as pictured. We do not believe in restoring old signs because it is our belief that every ding, dent, and blemish is part of the story and history of the item. However, this sign, is in Excellent (Exl) condition overall with very little visible damage of any kind on the sign. The only damage of any significance (and the only thing preventing this sign from a Near Mint condition grade), is a small area with scuffing and paint chipping at the very bottom edge of the sign. Luckily, this area with the scuffing and chipping is at the very base below the bottle graphics, and is in an area of the sign that does not affect the visual appearance of the graphics or lettering.

Royal Crown "RC" Cola Historical Information
Early Years:
Royal Crown Cola, often abbreviated as RC Cola, has a history that spans over a century. RC Cola's roots can be traced back to 1905 when a pharmacist named Claud A. Hatcher founded the Chero-Cola Company in Columbus, Georgia, USA. The company initially produced a cola beverage called "Chero-Cola," which gained popularity in the local region.
Introduction of Royal Crown Cola:
In 1934, Hatcher rebranded the company and its flagship cola as "Royal Crown Cola," which aimed to highlight the drink's premium quality. This was a significant shift for the company as it sought to compete with more established cola brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola.
Innovation - First Diet Cola:
In 1958, Royal Crown Cola made a significant contribution to the soft drink industry by introducing the first-ever diet cola, called Diet Rite Cola. This was a groundbreaking development that catered to consumers looking for a lower-calorie option. Diet Rite Cola was sweetened with cyclamate and saccharin, making it a pioneer in the diet beverage category.
Changing Ownership and International Expansion:
RC Cola expanded its international presence during the 1970s, with bottling and distribution operations in numerous countries. RC Cola underwent various changes in ownership over the years. In the 1980s and 1990s, the brand's ownership shifted through acquisitions and mergers. Despite these changes, RC Cola continued to maintain its presence in various markets around the world. In the 1990s, the company underwent several changes in ownership and management. In 2000, RC Cola was acquired by Cadbury Schweppes, a major beverage and confectionery conglomerate.
Regional Popularity and Nostalgia:
While RC Cola did not achieve the same global recognition as Coca-Cola or Pepsi, it remained popular in certain regions, particularly in the southern United States. The brand often appeals to consumers seeking a nostalgic connection to a less ubiquitous cola option.
About The Donaldson Art Sign Company And History
The Donaldson Art Sign Company located in Cincinnati, Ohio can be traced back to a partnership between William M. Donaldson and Henry Elms. These two entrepreneurs began a small lithography business in Cincinnati on August 10, 1863. By the end of the first year of operation, the firm owned and operated seven hand printing presses. With the death of Mr. Elms in 1872, the business became the sole property of Donaldson. The company was officially incorporated as the Donaldson Lithograph Co. in 1883.
The company moved to the City of Newport, Kentucky in 1898, and was housed in the old Duber Watch Case Company facility (6th and Washington Streets). The company flourished in its Newport location. By 1913, plans were underway to expand the firm. William M. Donaldson acquired the old Central Covington Stockyards at 21st and Banklick Streets. Plans called for a 50,000 square foot building that would eventually employ 200 workers. The cost of construction reached the sum of nearly $100,000. Work on the new plant was begun in August 1914.
