Rush Pump Co. Model H "Stove Pipe" Visible Gas Pump History

The Rush Pump Company, Lafayette, Indiana, began making gas pumps in the 1920's until the 1940's. The Rush Pump Co. Model H, commonly known as the "Stove Pipe" gas pump, is a notable example of early 20th-century fuel dispensing technology. Manufactured primarily in the 1930s, these pumps were characterized by their tall, cylindrical design, resembling a stove pipe, which made them distinct in appearance.

Key Features and History:

  1. Design: The Model H featured a visible glass cylinder that allowed customers to see the amount of gasoline being dispensed. This transparency was innovative for its time and aimed to build trust with customers.
  2. Construction: The body was typically made of metal, often painted in bright colors, with a classic Art Deco influence in its design. The "Stove Pipe" nickname came from its tall, narrow profile.
  3. Mechanism: It utilized a mechanical pumping system, usually powered by a hand crank or a gravity feed. This manual operation required customers to be more engaged in the fueling process.
  4. Production: Rush Pump Co. was one of several manufacturers during the boom of gas station development in the 1920s and 1930s. The Model H became popular for its reliability and ease of use.
  5. Collectibility: Today, these pumps are highly sought after by collectors of vintage gas station memorabilia. Restored models can fetch significant prices at auctions.
  6. Cultural Impact: The Model H and its contemporaries played a crucial role in the evolution of the gas station, reflecting the growing car culture of the era. They symbolize a time when service stations were often full-service, providing not just fuel but also maintenance and repairs.

Conclusion:

The Rush Pump Co. Model H "Stove Pipe" gas pump is a significant artifact of automotive history, representing both technological innovation and the cultural shifts of the early 20th century. Its design and function encapsulate the era's transition toward modern fueling practices.
