Wayne 493 (Roman Column) Gas Pump Historical Information
The Vintage Wayne 493 gas pump, also known as the "Roman Column" gas pump, is a classic piece of Americana that reflects the design aesthetics of the early 20th century, and how prolific the influence Art Deco design was during this period. Introduced in the 1920’s, the Wayne 493 featured a unique design inspired by Roman architecture. Its prominent cylindrical shape with fluted columns gave it the nickname "Roman Column" gas pump.
The pump's body was typically made of sheet metal, often with an enamel finish, and its columns were made of cast iron. The combination of these materials created an elegant and durable structure. Faceplate for the Wayne 493 gas pump were usually made of porcelain, and displayed the brand name and logo of the gas company. These pumps also included a glass cylinder or "visible" measuring system, allowing customers to see the fuel being dispensed. This feature was both practical and captivating, enhancing the pump's visual appeal.
During the 1920’s and 1930’s, the Wayne 493 gas pump became popular at service stations across the United States. Its classic Art Deco design, reminiscent of ancient Roman architecture, was a departure from earlier pump styles, which were often more utilitarian in appearance. The Roman Column pump added a touch of sophistication and elegance to the gas station landscape. As the decades passed, the Wayne 493 gas pump evolved with changing technologies and design trends. However, its distinctive cylindrical shape and fluted columns remained a recognizable feature.
Although newer pump models emerged in the coming years, the Wayne 493 continued to hold a special place in the hearts of collectors and enthusiasts, reminding them of the golden era of gasoline stations. Today, the Vintage Wayne 493 gas pump, with its Roman Column design, is among the most highly sought after by collectors and vintage gas station enthusiasts.
