Borden's Ice Cream Sign: Vintage Neon "Elsie The Cow" Advertisement
This original vintage neon Borden's Ice Cream sign is just one of hundreds of collectible Americana, automobilia and petroliana collectibles currently for sale from ArtFactory.com. This single sided, genuine vintage tin litho sign is extra large measures 5 feet 3inches tall by 3 feet 1 inches wide, and is on a 10 inch deep heavy metal can. It reads "Borden's Ice Cream, If It's Borden's It's Got To Be Good" and features the character Elsie the Cow. The top of the sign lights up with the words "Service Grocery". This is a full color sign that features a red and white background, with primarily blue lettering on the main sign. The top area has a blue background with white lettering. The word "Borden's" lights up in red neon, and the words "Ice Cream and Service Grocery" light up in white neon. There is also blue neon around the upper area of the sign. It is an original advertisement from the 1940's that was originally displayed in grocery stores. The sign was discovered by one of America's most famous and knowledgeable pickers, Robbie Wolfe, who stars on the reality television show American Pickers.
Like all of our collectible signs, it is sold in original, unrestored condition as pictured. We do not believe in restoring old signs because it is our belief that every ding, dent, and blemish is part of the story and history of the item. Furthermore, this sign is not a rebuild, and is 100 percent original in every way! The only exception being the neon which was restored by our in house glass blowers, who have blown new glass using the same techniques and materials that were used for the original neon. Also, any electrical parts including wiring and solid state transformers have been replaced. The neon features a separate on/off toggle pull cord as pictured.

Elsie The Cow Historical Information
Elsie the Cow is a cartoon cow developed as a mascot for the Borden Dairy Company in 1936 to symbolize the "perfect dairy product". Since the demise of Borden in the mid-1990s, the character has continued to be used in the same capacity for the company's partial successors, Eagle Family Foods (owned by J.M. Smucker) and Borden Dairy.
Named one of the Top 10 Advertising Icons of the [20th] Century by Ad Age in 2000, Elsie the Cow has been among the most recognizable product logos in the United States and Canada.

Borden, Inc., was an American producer of food and beverage products, consumer products, and industrial products. At one time, the company was the largest U.S. producer of dairy and pasta products. Its food division, Borden Foods, was based in Columbus, Ohio, and focused primarily on pasta and pasta sauces, bakery products, snacks, processed cheese, jams and jellies, and ice cream. It was best known for its Borden Ice Cream, Meadow Gold milk, Creamette pasta, and Borden Condensed Milk brands. Its consumer products and industrial segment marketed wallpaper, adhesives, plastics and resins. By 1993, sales of food products accounted for 67 percent of its revenue.
