Marathon Oil Company History
The Marathon Oil company began in 1887 as The Ohio Oil Company in northwestern Ohio, which at the time was the hub of US crude oil production. Two years later, in 1889, they were purchased by John D. Rockefeller and became a part of Standard Oil. They remained part of Standard Oil until it was broken up in 1911. In 1924 they got into the oil refining business for the first time, and in 1930 they purchased the Transcontinental Oil Company. It was at this point that they started using the Marathon Product name, Pheidippides logo, and "Best In The Long Run" slogan. This is also the year when they began to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Over the companies long history they have undergone a number of changes, including changing their official name to Marathon Oil Company in 1962. They were owned by US Steel from 1982-2002, and in 1990 moved their headquarters from Ohio to Houston where they still remain today. In 2002, the company once again became independent and continues to operate independently.
