William C. Durant played a significant role in the founding and growth of General Motors (GM). Durant was a successful businessman who founded the Buick Motor Company in 1904, which became the cornerstone of the GM empire. In 1908, Durant organized a group of investors and founded General Motors as a holding company for several car companies, including Buick. GM quickly became one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, thanks in large part to Durant's vision and leadership. However, Durant's tenure at GM was not without its challenges. He was known for his aggressive business tactics and expansionist ambitions, which led to the company taking on significant debt. In 1910, Durant lost control of GM to a group of bankers who had loaned the company money.

Despite this setback, Durant was not deterred. He founded the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911 with Louis Chevrolet, which quickly became a successful and profitable company. Around the same time, Durant also assembled United Motors Corporation, an automotive component and accessory holding company, to provide GM with a reliable source of automotive parts. This allowed GM to increase efficiency and reduce costs, which in turn allowed the company to offer more competitive prices and expand its market share.

After losing control of GM in 1910 due to financial difficulties, Durant was determined to regain control of the company. Durant's founding of United Motors Corporation was an important move for him to regain control of General Motors. The final piece of the puzzle was found in the profits he made from his newly founded Chevrolet company. With the profits from Chevrolet, Durant was able to purchase enough GM stock to regain control of the company in 1916.

Furthermore, United Motors Corporation played a crucial role in the growth and expansion of General Motors throughout the early 20th century. The company's subsidiaries produced a wide range of automotive parts, including chassis components, engines, transmissions, and electrical systems, which were used in GM vehicles. The company's role as a supplier of these key components helped to make GM one of the largest and most successful automotive companies in the world. Today, the legacy of United Motors Corporation lives on through General Motors and its subsidiaries, which continue to produce a wide range of automotive components and accessories.
