Mack Trucks Bulldog Logo History

The famous Bulldog hood ornaments have adorned Mack Trucks since the 1930's, and are an iconic symbol of the brand. The first design was carved from a bar of soap in 1932. Image by Brigitte Werner from Pixabay

The Mack Truck Bulldog logo is an iconic symbol associated with Mack Trucks, one of the most well-known manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks in the United States. The Bulldog logo has a rich history and symbolism. Here's more information about it:

  1. Origins: The Bulldog first became associated with Mack Trucks during World War I. This was when British soldiers nicknamed the Mack AC models that were used by Allied forces as "Bulldog Macks". This is because, like the Bulldog, these trucks were known for their strength, tenacity, and durability,. The Bulldog moniker stuck from that point on. The Mack Truck Bulldog logo itself dates back to the early 1920s, and was created by Alfred Fellows Masury, a chief engineer for the company at that time. The Bulldog was chosen as a symbol of the company's products due to its similar qualities, which Mack Trucks aimed to embody in their vehicles.
  2. Symbolism: The Bulldog logo represents the rugged and enduring nature of Mack Trucks. Bulldogs are known for their strength, determination, and resilience, which align with the characteristics of Mack trucks designed for heavy-duty hauling and construction purposes.
  3. Design: The Bulldog logo typically features a stylized image of a bulldog's head, often with a spiked collar around its neck. The design has evolved over the years but has retained the essential bulldog motif. It has been featured on the front grilles of Mack Trucks for decades.
  4. Bulldog Hood Ornaments: In 1932, Alfred Fellows Masury, a chief engineer at Mack Trucks, was in the hospital  recuperating from an operation. During his recovery, he hand-carved the first model of the now iconic Bulldog hood ornament out of a bar of soap. Once released from the hospital, Masury applied for a patent on his design, and the bulldog hood ornament has adorned Mack trucks ever since.
  5. Mack's Motto: Alongside the Bulldog logo, Mack Trucks has the motto "Built Like a Mack Truck." This motto reinforces the idea that Mack trucks are built tough and built to last, aligning with the bulldog's symbolism.
  6. Enduring Icon: The Bulldog logo has become an enduring symbol in the trucking industry and is instantly recognizable. It signifies reliability, durability, and quality.
  7. Mack Trucks' Legacy: Mack Trucks, founded in 1900, has a long history in the manufacturing of commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses. Over the years, Mack Trucks has been a significant player in the development of heavy-duty trucks in the United States and around the world.
  8. Collectibles and Merchandise: The Bulldog logo has also been featured on various merchandise and collectibles associated with Mack Trucks, including clothing, accessories, and promotional items. Enthusiasts of Mack Trucks often seek out memorabilia featuring the iconic Bulldog logo.
