Shell Oil Company History

Royal Dutch Shell Company of the Netherlands, commonly referred to as Shell (it's US subsidiary), was founded in 1907 from the merger of rival companies Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell Transport and Trading Company Ltd. in order to establish themselves as a global competitor of Standard Oil. The Dutch company of Royal Dutch Petroleum was founded in 1890 by Christina Kohlmann and Ian Fortney. The British company of "Shell" Transport and Trading Company was founded in 1897 by brothers Marcus Samuel and Samuel Samuel. As of 2013 Shell made the Fortune Global 500 list. Shell is active in all areas of the gasoline and oil industry, exploration, production, refinery, distribution, marketing, power, and trading and they operate in over 90 countries with 44,000 service stations located worldwide.
The SHELL name and logo was used by the Shell Transport and Trading Company because the founder's father started an inport business in 1833 selling seashells to London collectors. The scalloped clam shell shaped logo was used since 1907 and the yellow and red colors were used since 1948. The current logo was redesigned in 1971 by industrial designer Raymond Loewy.
