Coca-Cola Company And Brand History
Antique sign for Coca-Cola soft drink created in 1886 by John Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. Pemberton was wounded in the Battle of Columbus, Georgia and became addicted to the morphine he used to ease the pain. As a pharmacist, he started working in 1866 on an opium-free drug alternative to morphine and created his French Wine Coca formula. When Atlanta enacted temperance legislation in 1886, Pemberton reworked his formula to produce a non-alcoholic alternative. Pemberton decided to sell the new formula as a fountain drink rather than a medicine, and his bookkeeper Frank Mason Robinson came up with the name "Coca-Cola" for the alliterative sound, writing the name in Spencerian script, which remains today as one of the most recognized trademarks in the world.
Originally introduced in May 1886 at Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta, today the carbonated soft drink Coca-Cola is sold in more than 200 countries. It is produced by The Coca-Cola Company of Atlanta, Georgia, and is often referred to simply as Coke (a registered trademark since 1944). Originally intended as a patent medicine when it was invented in the late 19th century by John Pemberton, Coca-Cola was bought out in 1888 by businessman Asa Griggs Candler (1851-1929), whose aggressive marketing tactics led Coke to its dominance of the world soft-drink market throughout the 20th century.
